Jerry Danielsen

Jerry Danielsen, owner of Busy Signal Studios, has many talents and many interests. This Santa Clarita resident is a composer, performer, producer, interdisciplinary artist, poet and educator. He enjoys composing music for film and television, theatre, contemporary classical works, jazz, commercial, experimental, as well as music for electronic instruments and traditional orchestras.

From an early age, Jerry has been a true innovator. In the late 70's, he studied guitar, piano, and bass intensely; led and performed with several rock, jazz, and R&B groups. Continuing through the 80's, Jerry attended recording school and began recording his own music. At this time, he incorporated much of his music into multimedia shows featuring his own poetry (as a founding editor of Vol. No. Poetry Magazine) and visual artistry. These opportunities have exposed Jerry's music to thousands of people.

Later on, Jerry's interest in movie soundtracks brought him to further studies and compositions. Having already completed a few scores, he spent the mid-80's as a production assistant for "Romeo Void" and "Animotion" rock videos while composing, conducting and performing a wide range of music for various exciting events: LA Street Scene, The Roxy, The Whisky, Club Lingerie, The Music Machine, FM Station, LACMA, 1984 Olympic Arts Festival, Imagination Celebration, Festival of the Masks, Children's Museum, Taffy Festival, Los Angeles Festival, Thousand Oaks Festival, Santa Barbara Festival, and assorted venues in San Francisco and San Diego. Jerry also published his music and poetry through Black Bear Press.

In the late 80's, Jerry decided to establish his own recording studio, Busy Signal Studios, where he could manage and coordinate these multiple activities in a central location and work unrestrained as a composer/producer and recording engineer. He then completed the composition and recording of four film scores, several videos, musical message tapes and television commercials. Jerry also achieved the honor of performing and working with the composer John Cage. After traveling Europe, he began teaching music lessons while earning his composition degree at California Institute of the Arts. Jerry studied with Mel Powell, Barry Schrader, Morton Sobotnick, James Newton, Michael Fink and Stephen Mosko, to name a few.

In the 90's, Jerry devoted his occupation to composing, arranging and producing a wide variety of projects. These include nine more film scores for video distribution and theatre. He has worked extensively as a studio musician-arranger and recorded his music with members from Oingo Boingo and Frank Zappa's band. Additionally, at the request of renowned clarinetist William Powell, Jerry wrote "Counterpieces", which highlights the use of new interactive electro-acoustic technology. The piece was featured at university concerts in the USA and India, and at SCREAM (Southern California Resource for Electro-Acoustic Music).

Currently, Jerry is writing music for a feature film called "The Green Goddess". He performs solo and with ensembles both commercial and experimental, as well as having established a non-profit organization called "Food for Thought", that promotes peace, blends eclectic art forms and distributes food to those in need. In addition, he writes music for actor/butoh artist Don McLeod (Hook, Total Recall), and more -- building on what is already a great catalog of music.
